Between 16th and 21st March, 1917, the 9th Essex battalion of 35 Brigade, 12th Division were in the front line near Arras. On 17th March, 5th Royal Berkshire launched a raid on the German lines from the trenches held by 9th Essex which resulted in a retaliatory artillery bombardment by the enemy which continued until they were relieved. Rudolph Gale died from wounds on 20th March and it is very likely that he was wounded during this spell in the front line. |
